US President Trump Reveals Putin’s Warning: Russia to Retaliate Against Ukraine’s Recent Attacks
Washington, D.C., June 5, 2025 — US President Donald Trump disclosed on Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin warned him during a 75-minute phone call that Russia feels compelled to respond to Ukraine’s recent drone attacks on Russian airfields. The revelation, shared via a post on Truth Social, comes amid heightened tensions in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, with Trump noting that the conversation offered little hope for an immediate ceasefire.
Trump described the call as a "good conversation" but emphasized that it did not signal an imminent end to hostilities. “We discussed the attack on Russia’s docked airplanes, by Ukraine, and also various other attacks that have been taking place by both sides,” Trump wrote. He acknowledged Putin’s stance, stating that the Russian leader said he “would have to respond” to Ukraine’s strikes, which targeted military aircraft deep inside Russia over the weekend. Ukrainian officials reported that the operation damaged or destroyed 41 Russian aircraft, including strategic bombers, in what they described as a defensive measure against Moscow’s near-daily aerial assaults on Ukrainian civilians.
The call, the second between the two leaders in recent weeks, also touched on broader geopolitical issues, including Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Trump noted that he and Putin agreed that Iran “cannot have a nuclear weapon,” with the US president stressing that Russia’s cooperation on this matter was essential. However, the focus remained on the Ukraine conflict, where Trump has been pushing for peace negotiations since taking office earlier this year.
Despite Trump’s efforts to broker a ceasefire, the situation appears to be escalating. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, providing Moscow’s perspective on the call, claimed that Ukraine’s attacks were an attempt to “disrupt” recent peace talks held in Istanbul. He further stated that Trump admitted the US was not informed by Ukraine about the airbase strikes, underscoring a lack of coordination among allies. Ushakov also dismissed the possibility of a direct meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, calling it impractical.
The Ukrainian strikes, which included a separate attack on the Kerch Bridge linking Russia to occupied Crimea, have embarrassed the Kremlin, with some analysts suggesting Moscow’s reluctance to address the bridge incident publicly stems from its strategic significance. Ukraine has maintained that its operations target military infrastructure, not civilians, in response to Russia’s intensified bombardment of Ukrainian cities, which has killed dozens in recent weeks.
Trump’s comments come as pressure mounts for him to impose new sanctions on Russia, a step he has so far resisted. Last week, he expressed frustration with Putin, calling him “absolutely crazy” for launching large-scale aerial assaults on Ukrainian cities like Kyiv, which resulted in significant civilian casualties. European allies, including Germany, have urged coordinated sanctions, with Berlin’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul noting that recent talks in Istanbul revealed Putin’s unwillingness to accept a peace deal not heavily in his favor.
The US president’s disclosure has sparked mixed reactions domestically. Some Republican lawmakers, like Senator Lindsey Graham, advocate for tougher economic measures against Russia, while others caution against actions that could derail fragile peace efforts. Critics, including former US Ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor, argue that Putin has consistently outmaneuvered Trump, using negotiations as a stalling tactic while continuing military aggression.
As the war enters its fourth year, with Russia controlling roughly 20% of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, the prospect of peace remains elusive. Trump’s earlier campaign promise to end the conflict within 24 hours has yet to materialize, and his latest remarks suggest a growing realization of the challenges ahead. With Putin signaling retaliation and Ukraine showing no signs of backing down, the international community braces for a potential escalation in the conflict.
